BMP Background Remover
BMP files come from old scanners, legacy Windows software and industrial cameras — uncompressed, enormous, and rejected by half the web tools out there. bgclear processes BMPs directly in the browser: the background comes off, and the bloated bitmap comes back as a compact transparent PNG.

Mind the 10MB limit — BMPs are huge
Uncompressed BMP grows fast: a 2000×2000 image is ~12MB. If your file exceeds the limit, re-save it as PNG first (lossless, much smaller) and upload that.
Old scans benefit twice
Scanned documents and photos saved as BMP get a background removal and a format upgrade in one pass — PNG output is a fraction of the size with identical quality.
Check scan quality before processing
Old 256-colour BMPs carry dithering noise that roughens edges. If you still have the original, re-scan at 24-bit colour; if not, the AI still does well on clean subjects.
Common use cases
- Old scanned photos cleaned and modernised
- Legacy Windows clip-art to transparent PNG
- Industrial/machine camera output cleanup
- Archive digitisation projects
How it works
- 1.Upload the BMP file (up to 10MB — re-save as PNG first if larger).
- 2.The AI removes the background from the bitmap.
- 3.Download a compact transparent PNG — same quality, fraction of the size.
FAQs
Why is my BMP file so large?
BMP stores every pixel uncompressed. The PNG output is lossless too but compressed — typically 5–10× smaller with identical quality.
My BMP is over 10MB — what now?
Open it in any viewer (even Paint) and save as PNG, then upload. PNG is lossless, so nothing is lost in that conversion.
Do old 256-colour BMPs work?
Yes, though dithered low-colour scans have noisier edges than modern photos. The AI handles clean subjects well regardless of palette.
Is the output BMP or PNG?
PNG — it carries transparency (BMP effectively doesn’t in normal use) and is far smaller.
Is bgclear free to use?
Yes — free, unlimited, with no signup and no watermark on downloads.
Which image formats can I upload?
JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 10MB. Output is an HD transparent PNG.
