Passport Photo Background Remover

Free, AI-powered, white or blue background, ready for visa and ID forms

Most passport, visa and government ID forms require a plain white or light-blue background. BG Clear removes the existing background from any selfie or studio photo and gives you a clean, compliant cutout you can drop on white, blue, or any solid color. The output is a high-quality transparent PNG you can resize to 35×45 mm, 2×2 inches, or whatever your form requires — completely free and without a signup.

Who this is for

  • People applying for a passport, visa, OCI or PR card
  • Students filling SSC, college, scholarship and exam forms
  • Job applicants who need a clean photo for HR portals
  • Parents creating ID photos for kids' school documents
  • Travel agents and CSC operators processing photos in bulk
  • Anyone whose phone selfie keeps getting rejected by ID portals

Why a clean background matters here

Forms reject non-plain backgrounds

Passport, visa and exam portals run automated checks that reject photos with shadows, gradients, or busy backdrops. A clean white or light-blue fill is the safest universal answer.

Phone selfies are good enough — if the background is fixed

Modern phone cameras already capture enough detail. The only thing standing between your selfie and an accepted ID photo is a uniform background, and that takes 5 seconds with AI.

No appointment, no studio fee

A studio passport photo costs ₹100–₹500 (or $10–$20). The exact same result, with the exact same lighting on your face, is free here.

Works for the whole family

Take photos of kids, elderly parents, or anyone who can't easily get to a studio, and turn them into compliant ID photos at home.

How to remove passport photo background in 3 steps

01

Upload your photo

Drag and drop a clear face photo (JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 10 MB). A front-facing shot in plain clothing works best.

02

Let AI cut you out

Our model isolates your face, hair, and shoulders, including fine flyaways. Processing usually finishes in under 5 seconds.

03

Pick a background and download

Choose white, light blue, or keep the transparency. Save the PNG, then crop to 35×45 mm or 2×2 inches before submitting.

What makes a passport-ready photo

A passport-ready photo is more than just a clean background. The face must occupy roughly 70–80% of the frame, eyes must be open and looking at the camera, and the lighting must be even with no harsh shadows on the face or behind the head. Most countries require a plain white background; India, China and a few others accept light blue. Once those conditions are met, the only remaining variable is the background — and that is exactly the part that AI background removal solves in one step.

For most users, the workflow is: take a phone selfie or have a friend snap a photo against any wall, upload it here, replace the background with white or blue, then crop to the size your form requires. This avoids the most common rejection reasons: shadow on the wall, a slightly off-white background that the verifier reads as gray, or visible objects behind the head. The AI extraction handles all three at once.

White background vs. light-blue background — which one to choose

Use pure white (#FFFFFF) for almost every Western passport, visa and OCI application, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the Schengen area, Australia and Canada. Use light blue (around #C6E0F0) when the form explicitly says so, which is common for some Indian government forms, school IDs and police verification documents. When in doubt, white is the safer default — most portals will accept a white-background photo even if blue is mentioned, while the reverse is rarely true.

If you're not sure which one to submit, BG Clear lets you download both: process the photo once, save the transparent PNG, then place it on either color in any editor (or use the in-app background selector). That way you can keep both versions ready for whatever the form turns out to demand.

Common reasons passport photos get rejected

The most common rejection reasons are: a shadow on the background wall, the background being slightly off-white or beige, a visible object (door frame, cupboard, light switch) behind the head, glasses with reflections, an open mouth or smile, hair covering the eyebrows, and a face that's too small or too large in the frame. AI background removal eliminates the first three at the source — by replacing the entire background with a clean fill — and the last point (face size) is solved at the cropping stage.

If your photo was previously rejected, you don't need to re-shoot. Upload the original, replace the background here, and resubmit. We routinely see users get accepted on the second try with the exact same source photo, just with the background fixed.

Privacy and what happens to your photo

Your photo is processed for the purpose of background removal and never sold or used for advertising. We don't require an account or email address — you can complete the entire workflow without telling us who you are. After you download the result, the input is no longer needed for the service. For an extra layer of comfort, you can clear the page after the download is complete.

Best practices for the cleanest result

1Even, front-facing light

Stand facing a window in daylight, or use a single bright light in front of you. Avoid overhead light that casts shadows under your eyes and chin.

2Plain clothing in a contrasting color

Wear a solid color that contrasts with the background you'll choose. Dark clothing reads cleanly on white; a light shirt photographs well against blue.

3Hair off the face, no headwear

Tie hair back and remove caps, headphones, and large earrings unless religiously required. AI segments hair well, but a clean silhouette helps the form's verifier too.

4Neutral expression, eyes open, glasses off

Most countries now require glasses-off photos. Look straight into the camera, mouth closed, with a relaxed expression.

5Crop after, not before

Don't pre-crop to passport size. Let the tool process the full headshot — you'll get cleaner edges. Then crop to the country's required dimensions.

6Save as PNG, then export to JPG if asked

Always download the PNG with transparency from BG Clear. If the portal demands JPG, place the PNG on your background color in any image editor and export.

Frequently asked questions

Is the passport photo background remover really free?

Yes. There's no signup, no watermark, and no per-image cost. Process as many photos as you need.

Can I make the background blue instead of white?

Yes. After the AI removes the original background, pick blue (or any color) from the editor before downloading. Light blue is common for Indian government forms.

What size will I get — 35×45 mm or 2×2 inches?

BG Clear preserves the full resolution of your upload. After downloading, crop to your country's exact size: 35×45 mm for most of the world, 2×2 inches (51×51 mm) for the United States.

Will the tool work for kids and elderly people?

Yes. The AI segments faces of any age, including babies in arms. As long as the face is visible and reasonably lit, you'll get a clean cutout.

Can I use a phone selfie or do I need a studio camera?

A modern phone selfie is more than enough. The only thing that mattered before — a plain background — is solved by the AI here.

Does it work if I'm wearing a turban, hijab, or religious headwear?

Yes. The AI segments hair, headwear and shoulders cleanly together. Most countries explicitly allow religious head coverings as long as the face is fully visible.

Can I remove the background from a scanned passport photo?

Yes. Upload the scan as JPG or PNG and the AI will isolate the subject. Scanned photos work well as long as they're sharp and not heavily compressed.

Will the file size meet portal upload limits?

Yes. The PNG output is typically a few hundred kilobytes, well under the 1–5 MB limit that most government portals enforce.
