What makes a passport-ready photo

A passport-ready photo is more than just a clean background. The face must occupy roughly 70–80% of the frame, eyes must be open and looking at the camera, and the lighting must be even with no harsh shadows on the face or behind the head. Most countries require a plain white background; India, China and a few others accept light blue. Once those conditions are met, the only remaining variable is the background — and that is exactly the part that AI background removal solves in one step.

For most users, the workflow is: take a phone selfie or have a friend snap a photo against any wall, upload it here, replace the background with white or blue, then crop to the size your form requires. This avoids the most common rejection reasons: shadow on the wall, a slightly off-white background that the verifier reads as gray, or visible objects behind the head. White background vs. light-blue background — which one to choose

Use pure white (#FFFFFF) for almost every Western passport, visa and OCI application, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the Schengen area, Australia and Canada. Use light blue (around #C6E0F0) when the form explicitly says so, which is common for some Indian government forms, school IDs and police verification documents. When in doubt, white is the safer default — most portals will accept a white-background photo even if blue is mentioned, while the reverse is rarely true.

Common reasons passport photos get rejected

The most common rejection reasons are: a shadow on the background wall, the background being slightly off-white or beige, a visible object (door frame, cupboard, light switch) behind the head, glasses with reflections, an open mouth or smile, hair covering the eyebrows, and a face that's too small or too large in the frame. AI background removal eliminates the first three at the source — by replacing the entire background with a clean fill — and the last point (face size) is solved at the cropping stage.
